The Mark IV 'Male' tank was a development of the Mk I heavy tank having thicker armour, an external fuel tank at the rear to improve crew safety and rails above to carry an 'un-ditching' beam to be used in the all too common event of the tank becoming stuck in a trench. The design was intended to use an improved engine and transmission than used on the Mk I but due to production difficulties the MK IV entered service in May 1917 with the same engine. |

The main armament of two 6lb guns were mounted in sponsons on the side that could be pushed in to facilitate transport by rail. Just over a thousand Mk IV's were produced of which 420 were the Male variant (the Female had machine guns instead of the 6lb guns) |
